On February 12, 2017, I visited the TAMS (Texas Academy of Mathematics & Science) chess group which meets at 2:00 p.m. Sundays at Emily Fowler Library in Denton, TX. Ten TAMS students were present, with one of them studying, one waiting for a game, and the other eight playing each other. As I watched the games, a girl and her father showed up.

I (Alexey Root) saw the Disney film Queen of Katwe today. I really enjoyed it. The film has a heart-warming story and the actors are convincing in their roles. Queen of Katwe also has plenty of chess scenes to satisfy the chess players in the audience.

Dr. Alexey Root taught a Chess merit badge workshop and ran a tournament from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (12-12:30 p.m. lunch break) at the National Scouting Museum. Thirteen Scouts attended. One Scoutmaster adult participated so that the day had an even number.  Requirements were covered but only 10 of the 13 Scouts were able to complete their badge on August 27.
