I am teaching another series of chess classes at the Denton Public Library, North Branch. Classes are for children ages 5-14, start September 16 (2-3:30 p.m.), and run for six Fridays. This series of classes is called Thinking with Chess. The challenges and puzzles in the Thinking with Chess classes emphasize skills important for academics, such as classifying, pattern recognition, decoding, creating, and predicting.
Children will try challenges such as "four in a row" and guessing a mystery chessman. They will also solve checkmates in one move. There will be time to play games of chess too. No previous chess experience is required to participate.
Activities from the chess classes that I previously taught at the Denton Public Library in are now part of my book The Living Chess Game: Fine Arts Activities for Kids 9-14 (Libraries Unlimited, 2011).
