For the St. Vincent’s Chess Club meeting on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, Dr. Alexey Root taught the "Mazes and Monsters" lesson plan from Science, Math, Checkmate: 32 Chess Activities for Inquiry and Problem Solving to the beginners. While students set up mazes for each other, Dr. Root retaught and tested the two-rook checkmate with students.

For the intermediate students, Dr. Root individually tested students on the king and queen versus king checkmate while the others played Battleship Chess. (The Battleship Chess lesson plan is in Children and Chess: A Guide for Educators).

For the advanced students, Dr. Root asked if students had researched Max Euwe's analysis of the king and seven pawns versus king and seven pawns endgame that they practiced with each other last week. A couple of students shared their own analysis of that ending. Then students played Battleship Chess with each other while I tested a few students individually on the king and queen versus king checkmate.
